The following are the merits of pipeline transport in India:

  1. Solids (when converted into slurry), liquids and gases can be transported through pipelines.
  2. Initial cost of laying pipelines is high but subsequent running costs are minimal.
  3. Trans-shipment of losses and delays are ruled out.
  4. It is economical to transport petroleum, natural gas, fertilizers to interior places of the country.
