  1. Previously, these were used to transport water to cities and industries.
  2. Presently these are used to transport crude oil, petroleum products and natural gas.
  3. Initial cost of laying pipelines is high but running costs are minimal.
  4. It rules out delay and losses. Some networks are from oilfield in upper Assam to Kanpur.
