Why did Douglas’ mother recommend that he should learn swimming at the Y.M.C.A swimming pool?

Douglas’ mother recommended that he should learn swimming at the Y.M.C.A pool because it was safe. It was only 2–3 feet deep at the shallow end. The other end was about 9 feet deep and the drop was gradual.
