How did the King of Mahajanapadas maintain the expenses of the state?

Some of the ways to manage expenses were:

1. Kings had the authority to collect taxes from the common people. They were also allowed to take tributes from the cultivators and traders.
2. Raids in the neighbouring states were considered a legitimate option for acquiring wealth.
