How did Ebright get the idea of his new theory about cell life?

The tiny gold spots on a Monarch pupa initiated Ebright’s research on cell life. He found out the spots were producing a hormone necessary for the butterfly’s full development. His research was thus able to identify the hormone’s chemical structure.
