Historians have used many sources to reconstruct the history of the Mauryan Empire:

  1. The archaeological findings like sculptures.
  2. Valuable contemporary works such as Megasthenes Indica who was a Greek ambassador to the court of Chandragupta Maurya
  3. The book of Arthashastra, parts of which were probably composed by Kautilya or Chanakya.
  4. Pillar inscriptions of Asoka.
  5. Rock edicts of Asoka.
