The reasons for the rise of Magadha as a powerful Mahajanapada are:
- Magadha was very productive for the agricultural activities that ensured food sufficiency in the region.
- The iron mines were located at small distances in the present day Jharkhand. This ensured the supply of efficient tools and weapons.
- Elephants were the main components of the army that were available in the nearby forests.
- Ganga and its tributaries helped in establishing effective communication for the kingdoms.
- Some of the most powerful rulers of those times like Ajatasattu, Bimbisara controlled the region of Magadha.
