Why the period of Buddha is said to be the period of oral tradition?

The Buddha and his disciples used to give lectures and impart teachings orally. The debates and discussions of the Sanghas were not recorded during the earlier period of Buddhism. It was after the death of Buddha that his teachings were compiled by his disciples in the texts that came to be known as Tripitaka.
