Why does Mrs. Pearson rebuke Doris in the presence of Fitzgerald?

When Doris enters the room, Mrs. Fitzgerald greets her and ask her whether she is going out with Charlie Spence. Doris tells her impudently that it is none of her business. Mrs. Pearson rebukes her and asks her to answer Mrs. Fitzgerald properly.
