Why does Derry stay away from people?

Derry suffers from the complex that most of the physically impaired persons suffer from. He has become withdrawn and defiant. He has got a burnt face. He thinks that he is the ugliest person on the earth. People find his face very terrible. So he is not afraid of the people but they are afraid of him.
