William Douglas wanted to learn swimming in Yakima River but many cases of drowning had been reported. There was a swimming pool at the Y.M.C.A. It offered the opportunity to learn swimming. The pool was quite safe as compared to the Yakima River. At one end, it was just two to three feet and at the other end it was nine feet deep. The drop was gradual. Therefore, the writer, Douglas, chose the Y.M.C.A pool to learn swimming.
