Why did the pirate ‘gape’ at Belinda’s dragon?

When the dragon saw the pirate, he charged at him and began to snort loudly. The pirate didn’t expect such a violent reaction from the dragon. He couldn’t withstand such a reaction and stared at the dragon with an open mouth in fear and disbelief.
