Why did the elders of the village attend the last lesson?

The order had come from Berlin to stop teaching French in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine and in its place German to be taught instead. In the last French lesson, the elderly were seen occupying the last benches as a mark of respect for M. Hamel who had taught there for forty years. They sat there as they wished to have gone to school more.
