Who were Samantas? What were their duties?

Samantas were the powerful men who had control over greater resources including the land. They have their evidence in the Gupta empire. Some of their duties were:

1. Samantas offered military assistance and homage to the rulers.
2. Powerful Samantas could sometimes even become kings.
