Who were Jatis? How did they come into existence?

Jatis were the social groups that were created for the community involved in similar occupations or activities. Whenever a community does not fit into the Varna system, they were organised in a Jati. For example, people involved in the profession related to gold came to be known as the Suvarnakara.
