What do you understand by a first–day cover?

The value of a newly issued stamp increases if it has the post mark of the date of issue on it. Therefore, the stamp collectors buy new stamps on the very first day of its sale and paste them on self–addressed envelopes and post them. These envelopes are called the first–day covers. With just a blank paper enclosed inside, they are never opened.
