Discuss the character of Candida as she appears in the auction scene of the play.

In the auction scene, Candida has been portrayed as a lady of tact and self-confidence. She handles the two men as if they were two grown- up babies and is in full command of the situation. She sees through Morell, knows his emotional dependence, and that he is the weaker of the two. She also understands the real strength of Marchbanks and that he does not need her. With the right maternal instinct or with the life force working through her, she chooses Morell for he is a better father and bread winner for her children, than the poet Marchbanks is ever likely to be. The scene clearly reveals the frankness of Candida. She is one of the Shaw’s New Age Woman who does not belong to anyone but herself.
